new things to see and hear and buy and talk about and blog about perraggafount!

May 5, 2012

well mom, you know how i like to keep myself bizzy.  lately i’ve been working on a few things, including updating my website to include things that i’ve been working on, except for working on my website, which isn’t an update on the site but i think becomes evident when one views said site.

www.jonsteinmeier.com

one exciting thing that i’m finally selling sheet music on the site, in the “score store.”  so far i have “the page turner’s big break” and a couple of the piano etudes available.  more coming soon!

two exciting thing is that i’ve updated the site with lovely pictures that i like, and links to a bunch of stuff i’ve worked or am working on.

three exciting thing that the Rhymanese Twins and SnakenStein now have websites.  the rhymanese twins is an act that noah tabakin and i developed for Tour de Fat last year that we’re revisiting on this years tour as well.

the SnakenStein show is a NEW show that we’ve developed for Tour de Fat and other stage and street venues this year.  we’re very excited about it!

four exciting things visit my new site and all of the other sites!

love,

jon

The next big thing in birthday music

April 8, 2012

oh! hello. didn’t see you there.

ever get tired of singing the same happy birthday song to friends and family of yours that are composers?

try making a special a capella birthday rendition of something that they composed!

i did this recently for Mark Messing, based on an excerpt from an awesome piece of his called “Fredonia Strikes Back” that he wrote for orchestra.

here’s the excerpt:

and here’s my happy birthday mark messing a capella home recorded silly town version:

this was fun for a couple two tree reasons.

1. i got to get into this section of the piece and get to know it a little; figure out the chords and some of the voicings, etc.
2. the piece is a comically dark vehicle for a “happy birthday” message.
3. i like to sing. hadn’t done any voice only work in a while, and it’s quite satisfying. fun to sing all the parts and have to
tune to yourself, and in this case, make some percussion noises! also, nice to not have to set up and tear down other gear
all afternoon recording live instruments.

whenever i get into a project like this it always makes me wanna do a whole set. like make a record of this, a record of that. kids songs, hip hop, a capella stuff, a heavy metal album. but who has the time?

anyway, thanks for the music mark! happy day!

Steinomite show in Vegas 3/22/12

March 23, 2012

hey mom!

last night Steinomite performed at Artifice in downtown Las Vegas.  the show kicked off the Neon Reverb festival that runs all weekend around town, and was hosted by the always hilarious Voki Kalfayan as “Bill Stevens.”  the bill consisted of Steinomite, my new friends Wazu from NYC, David Liebe Hart backed up by a rawk(!) power trio, and Penny and Melody from Absinthe doing a croony and funny duo show called “Sista’s from another Mista.”

’twas a really fun and pretty weird night.

i drove from L.A. with only about an hour to spare, having forgotten the cable i need to connect my iphone/band.  but, after giving me some shit, the soundman came up with one.  Steinomite was on first, and despite getting more shit from the soundman, started a little late to make sure the “sista’s” and some other folks were there.  i had to come out swinging to get people from the bar to the dance floor, but it worked!  got a great response and got some booties shak’n.  even mister grumpy soundman gave me props afterwards and apologized for his battitude.  BAM!

show highlights:

1.  in honor of Penny from Absinth, i used a sock puppet for some talk-back and nay-saying, and eventually beat the $h!t out of him.

2.  spent most of “alien abductapohone” lying on the stage.

3.  got people to do weird dance moves.

4.  made a new outro for this show, introducing the next acts and promoting my website IN THE SAME TRACK!  i pre-recorded the singing and had the puppet do it.

listen to it NOW!

after the show i accidentally hung out in a casino hotel bar until 4:45a.  i felt like i was in a Terry Gilliam movie.

BUT I AM OK!

love,

jonathan

November 22, 2011

hi mom!  while, i haven’t updated this blog in a while, i have been busy making things!  don’t worry!

just came across this track this afternoon and thought i’d share it.  i made it a few months ago, before moving, starting Tour de Fat, etc.  it’s something i like and may develop or use for a steinomite song or something.  i dunno.

ok, so roommate drew durepos and i shared an office in our old place… in the living room.  it was tight.  but we did a good job of coordinating our noisy times to work for the other person.  one day i was working at my desk and drew asked to do some guitar practice, which was fine by me.  having been a little rammy anyway and needing a project, i realized that i could record his practice and possibly get a new set of samples out of it.  so i did.

i then went in and grabbed stuff i liked and tried to play with them as musical motives/repeated figures. i’m pretty happy with it!  love the combination of electronic and ambient live instruments in this.

thanks to drew for the awesome riffs!

Big Weekend Update Words

July 15, 2011

hey mom!  i know it’s been a while since i gave you an update using this BLOG MONSTER, so i thought i would do exactly that!

1 and 2.  Steinomite’s doing well, and he thanks you for asking.  He’s performing this saturday afternoon at 2p in the Le Tigre Tent at Chicago’s Tour de Fat.  it’s a festival thrown by New Belgium Brewing Company promoting their beer, bicycling, conservation, alternative energy, and great awesome fun!  as you know, i’m one of the music directors for the festival.  this’ll be our third one of this tour, and it’s going really well so far!  Steinomite also has a show with the Hüsker Dudes and Dead Rider at the Hideout on August 26th.  only a couple of days later, on August 28th, Steinomite will perform a short set at the Whistler, as part of a night put together by You, Me, Them, Everybody.

boy, that’s a lot!

3.  just last saturday was the release part for Hank Frisco: Galaxy Defender, Episode 2!  mom, remember how you like Star Trek and other science fiction shows?!  This episode is great, and required lots of fun music from me.  chase music, romantic music, villain music, hero music, office music.  among them, one that i really enjoyed writing, was the villain theme for my friend Tim Heurlin, and variations on it throughout the episode.  this was also a fun opportunity to do little variations on the main Hank Frisco theme.  as always, if you or anyone else (Dad?) have questions about the score, i’d love to talk you through it.  below is a link to the episode!  maybe i’ll expand on it in yet another incredibly interesting blog post!

4.  Footnote!  so psyched about how this show it turning out.  major props to Jon and Alicia Reisinger and their team for their awesome work on this show.  the most recent episode, “worried sick”, airs tomorrow night (friday july 15th) on WGN, and can then be viewed at www.fntv.com.  this episode, as well as the “lost and found” and “overstuffed” episodes were scored mostly by me.  drop me a line if you wanna talk about any of this music as well, and check out their facebook page here:  http://www.facebook.com/footnotetv

well, thanks for reading as always mom.  i sure hope you like EVERYTHING i do.

love,

Jonathan
